The first description of patients with clustering of various metabolic abnormalities such as hypertension, hyperglycaemia, and hyperuricaemia, was observed as early as 1923, but it was more than five decades after this observation, in 1988, that Reaven coined the term syndrome X’ for this conglomeration of various metabolic abnormalities, including glucose ntolerance, hypertension, increased very low density lipoproteins (VLDLs), triglycerides, and decreased high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), with insulin resistance being the basic underlying pathophysiologic problem.

In the current era of evidence-based medicine, inferential statistics is the backbone of medical research. Inferential statistics is increasingly being used to manage the ncertainties in health and medicine by measuring and minimising them. However, descriptive statistics is familiar and advantageous to many of us; a gap is always felt at the clinician end in considering the use of inferential statistics in their basic research work. The aim of this article is to focus on an explanation of some of the commonly used statistical methods, their interpretation, and the test of their significance.

Obesity is one of the major public health problems, affecting every region of the globe. Worldwide, around 0.5 billion people are classified as obese and about 1.5 billion more are overweight. According to a cross-sectional survey in five Indian cities,
overall prevalence of obesity and overweight is 6.8% and 33.5%, respectively. Obesity increases the likelihood of diseases such as cardiac disease,type 2 diabetes,obstructive sleep apnoea, certain types of cancer, and osteoarthritis.
